Background blur is often desired for portraits and other closeup subjects. The modest aperture of the common kit lens cannot provide much of this, thus the popularity of f/2.8 zoom lenses as a kit lens replacement. The f/2.8 lens used here is the “Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II SP LD Aspherical (IF)”. This brief example tries to show the differences for aperture and sensor size. Note that the smaller sensor for the Micro 4/3 camera does diminish the blur a little, compared to the APS-C sensor for the DSLR. Click on any image for a larger view.
