After years of getting by with the 9 point AF in my Canon 50D, I was curious to see what shooting with the new 45 point system would be like. Results were not exactly what I expected. Click below to see examples –
The three shots at the end with large grid are examples of the Live View “Smooth zone” AF mode. Not the same as the 45 point mode, I included it for interest.
Repeatability is not exactly rock solid! Which confused me, sometimes to the point of frustration. Now I was using an old Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, so no STM compatibility. Maybe with a new STM lens the pattern would have settled down better? Also I have not tried the multi-point mode for a Nikon. Maybe they are just as ragged?
